Beaming faces and squeals of joy and amazement could be seen and heard from across lower Westchester County last Saturday, June 9th. It’s no wonder when dozens of children from the Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club received brand new bicycles for the first time. For a fourth consecutive year, the non-profit organization, Foundation for Life, and Backyard Sports Cares have partnered on Foundation for Life’s Bike Day initiative to mastermind a secret bike giveaway for disadvantaged Westchester youngsters.

“Everyone remembers their first bicycle,” says Danny Bernstein, Director, Backyard Sports Cares. “And here are kids who haven’t had the opportunity to get their first bike. The fact that the community can come together, engage these youngsters in play, watch them have fun and then share in their joy as they take home their first bike, marks a truly special moment.”

The event was hosted on the grounds of Wartburg, a healthcare and nursing facility in Mount Vernon. Kids from the Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club were brought to the location under the pretense of a day of sports and activity play with Backyard Sports. After the activities came to a close, Foundation for Life executed the big bike reveal to rowdy cheers and a crowd of happy kids and families.
