“Clubbing It” In Local Communities Bring More To Our Kids Than Sports.

BYSC Clubbing itIn our continuing effort to bring more after school sports programs to underserved and special needs children in their own “backyard”, BYSC has been helped by the formation of dedicated and active community clubs comprised of local students…. community building at its best.

The Mamaroneck High School (MHS) BYSC Club, more than 40 members strong, help as peer mentors year round to local special needs children and nearby kids in White Plains for tennis. At Iona and The Ursuline School, a new co-ed club has just formed to support a special needs after school basketball program in New Rochelle. Another BYSC club at the Rye Country Day School will help The Carver Center Port Chester after school programs.

Many Scarsdale High School students serve as peer mentors for the Sunday PLUS program. Another group volunteer in the Amazing Afternoons after school program operated in Mt Vernon by Westchester Jewsih Community Services, one of BYSC partners. Each club is empowered with its own school budget, and sets its own priorities based on interest.

On November 22, BYSC is hosting a Junior 3X3 Basketball Tournament Fundraiser for 4th – 9th graders which will be staffed primarily with members from all the different clubs. They will run the food concessions, help man the baskets, and recruit players. As Sydney Farrell, one of the co-founders of the MHS club states.” It feels great to be giving back, but also getting so much back. This experience has given me leadership skills and business sense I wasn’t sure I had.”
