Special guest post by Jake S., teen volunteer for Backyard Sports Cares
On Friday, February 19th, six of my friends and I hosted a Backyard Sports Cares Basketball tournament for middle school students at the Calhoun School in New York City. Nearly 30 kids showed up to play from grades 5-8. The tournament was split into two brackets. One comprised fifth and sixth graders and the other seventh and eighth graders. There were three teams per bracket. My friends and I decided that the grand prize for each team would be a $10 Amazon gift card for each player, and the gift cards were donated by parents. Overall, I think the tournament went extremely well. And I couldn’t have hoped for anything better.

I would like to thank my friends who helped me set up and run this tournament. They are Myles T., Alex T., Aiden G., Andrew H., Mattie Foulke H., and Jonah S. Without them this never would have been possible. Thanks to generous donations by several people, we were able to have a fully stocked snack bar, too, which was a big hit. In total, we raised $346. The event was a great success and I’m thrilled that I got the chance to represent an amazing organization like Backyard Sports at my school.
