Anyone dropping in at Sound Shore Indoor Tennis in Port Chester on a Friday evening in late May or early June will witness quite a hubbub as 75 children mill around waiting impatiently to head down to the tennis courts. These youngsters are participants in the BYSC Friday Night Tennis Program, a comprehensive clinic for kids from underserved communities across Westchester. Launched four years ago in partnership with Sound Shore, the young players are introduced to tennis in a modern tennis facility where they are taught by experienced tennis professionals who are assisted by high school volunteers like Jordan Ziffer. Jordan, who comes from a real tennis family, is on the varsity tennis team at Scarsdale High School. His dad, Matt, has served as a volunteer in our Friday Night Tennis program since its earliest days as a pilot program in spring 2014.
After 90 minutes of instruction, these newly minted tennis players socialize over pizza with new friends from diverse backgrounds. Meanwhile, their parents get to know each other and share the pleasure of their children’s accomplishments.
Many thanks to Angela Stevens and her staff at Sound Shore for their support of this special program!
