On Wednesday afternoons, the Alice Grady grammar school lawn was transformed into a soccer field for more than 15 special needs children and their teenage mentor coaches from Hamiliton High School next door. The Backyard Sports Cares Plus sports program, hosted by Elmsford schools Special Education PTA (SEPTA) was a first for the community and reaped great benefits for all involved.
The volunteers are part of high school teacher Marissa Marx’s “Peers as Leaders” program. She feels it’s a perfect fit for her students to learn and grow. Marx says, “They each tell me they have been getting so much out of being with the children. These young people will gain so much experience in interacting and teaching them with the help of BYSC.” Plans are now in the works to offer a 6 week baseball this spring.
