For the sixth summer, BYSC provided basketball, soccer and tennis activity camps in collaboration with the White Plains Youth Bureau, the New Rochelle Board of Education and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for more than 400 youths in New Rochelle and White Plains.
The programs’ successes lie in the relationships between the high school staff and the kids. This year, Reed and Stephen Conner, two brothers from Larchmont, taught tennis on the same court which brought them closer together.
Going to different high schools. Reed puts it like this: “Camp Shape allowed us to fulfill a deep, mutual desire to help children less fortunate than us while, incidentally, renewing our bond. This was the icing on the cake: the chance to work on the same court with my brother while teaching children the invaluable life-lessons of sports: preparation, concentration, effort, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.”
