    “From Where I Sit…”

I’m sitting at home, behind my desk, on Week 7 of our shelter in place directive to contain the unrepentant coronavirus. Sitting around is not a characteristic one usually associates with a recreational organization. We promote hustle and motion, not idle movement. As you can imagine, the inactivity does not “sit” well within the framework of our mission statement. Although our programs remain suspended during the current crisis, I am inspired by the activity and contributions of our stakeholders and leadership team. Thanks to the following for their selfless acts and contributions:

Vin Minotti, BYSC program leader, and BYSC teen volunteers for creating YouTube activity videos for our special need and community athletes.

Dillon Faulkner, BYSC associate director, and our Red Shirts (high school senior volunteers) for hosting a Saturday Night online chat room promoting social activity for special need teenagers.

Megan Margiotti, Pace college student and Ebony Carelock, a site director for WJCS, for creating an afternoon virtual dance program for middle school students at the Mary J. Blige Center in Yonkers.

I am also grateful to our partners in Mt. Vernon, White Plains, and New Rochelle who remain vigilant and not sedentary as we look ahead and optimistically plan for the summer.

Sitting around stinks. There’s no sugar coating the obvious. Finding the right words to draw inspiration are difficult, but not impossible. From Jimmy Cliff’s album The Harder They Come, here’s a verse from the song “Sitting In Limbo:”

    Sitting here in limbo
But I know it won’t be long
    Sitting here in limbo
Like a bird without a song
    Well they’re putting up resistance
    But I know
That my faith will lead me on
