It was a very special day during the fifth week of MVP Summer Camp when Donovan Mitchell, three time NBA All-Star, showed up to offer advice and encouragement to the young basketball players. It was a homecoming of sorts for Mitchell, who attended MVP basketball camp more than 15 years ago when he was just eight years old.
Reflecting back on his experience as a camper, Donovan said, “Honestly, I remember getting my butt kicked for sure. I was not the best player at camp. I just remember the coaches being great, playing with my teammates, getting better, working hard and having fun.” Donovan added, “MVP is where I found my love for basketball, and ultimately this camp helped take me to where I wanted to go, and I am very thankful for that.”
MVP Basketball Camp, now a part of Backyard Sports Cares following the merger this summer, had one of their most successful summers in years. With more than 1,000 campers over six weeks, the camp was proud to provide more than 350 full scholarships to deserving families from all over Westchester County with limited access to quality summer programming.
